A Very good article about Broadband Speed

Today the speed of your broadband connection will ultimately determine how much you are able to achieve online. Gone are the days of dial-up when everyone was restricted to roughly the same minimal download speed and there are many different broadband connection types offering different speed ratings and different levels of consistency. This slightly confusing situation is compounded by the fact that internet service providers (ISPs) are never completely transparent about the real life connection speed that you will achieve in your own home. It is for this reason that many people choose to use a broadband speed test, as this is the only reliable way to discover the true speed of your broadband connection, not just the speed which your ISP says it can achieve.

Most broadband speed tests operate of fairly simple principles. If you are not an advanced user, then a basic speed test will meet your needs without overwhelming you with information. Speed tests are conducted by dedicated sites as well as ISPs themselves, so you will have a fairly broad choice. In essence a speed test gauges the download and upload speed of your connection by transferring files to and from your PC and measuring the speed at which this occurs. You will either be given this information as onscreen data, or be provided with the option to save this to your PC for later reference, or if required email it to your ISP for analysis.

There are more advanced broadband speed test sites out there and these will give you much greater control over the different parameters of the speed test. For example, you may be able to choose which server is used to send the data to and from your PC based on its location. This might be useful if you are trying to work out whether your broadband connection operates well over relatively small distances within your region, but not as well if it is accessing data stored nationally or internationally.

The most obvious benefit of running a broadband speed test is that you will be given a realistic picture of the real life performance of your broadband connection. This will allow you to accurately compare landline or wireless internet plans if you are thinking of making a change. It is also frequently used by people to help identify whether there is a fault with their connection and can be used as evidence to persuade your ISP that a remedy is required before they can fulfil their promises of a fast connection. It is worth bearing in mind that broadband speed tests need to be carried out in a certain manner in order to ensure that the results you get are accurate. Close any other programs that may be accessing the internet via your broadband connection, pause any downloads and make sure that other users are not surfing at the same time, as this could have a negative impact on the results and leave you with un representative data.
